Seriously, Rick Remender is\u00a0unable to kill any character. \u00a0(Well, so\u2019s every other comic writer these days, but that\u2019s a discussion for another time.) \u00a0A few issues back, that villainest of all villains, Baron Zemo, killed Captain America\u2019s sidekick Nomad, a.k.a. Steve Rogers\u2019 adopted son Ian from Dimension Z, by hanging him upside-down from chains, slitting his throat with a sword, and filming his death<\/em> with the intent of sending to Steve for Christmas! (And then<\/em> he wanted to sterilize America\u2019s minority population via an army of fleeeas! You just don\u2019t get more villainous than Baron Zemo!) \u00a0It was pretty unambiguous! \u00a0Oh but wait never mind Ian\u2019s alive.\u00a0 Turns out his armor is full of patented Arnim-Zola-brand ooey-gooey bio-gel, so it fixed him right up!\u00a0 With that in mind, I found myself skeptical at the cliffhanger of\u00a0that same\u00a0issue where the vampiric Baron Blood ate Redwing<\/em>, the Falcon\u2019s longtime avian sidekick, leaving him to happen upon\u00a0the grisly remains!\u00a0 Could this be an actual fatality?\u00a0 Because, yeah, that would be pretty messed up!\u00a0 But nope, never mind, now I guess he\u2019s just a vampire falcon\u00a0whaaaaat is happening<\/a><\/em><\/u>. \u00a0After Ian tells Captain America to go stop Baron Blood while he holds off Zemo,\u00a0later the building explodes, with no survivors, so Baron Zemo and Ian\u00a0are presumed dead by absolutely no one. \u00a0Seriously, Steve Rogers, the guy\u2019s\u00a0adopted father<\/em>, just shrugs it off! \u00a0Well, I guess if he<\/em> can\u2019t bother getting emotionally involved in this story\u2026! \u00a0But at least this was all illustrated by Stuart Immonen, who remains a treasure and we are lucky to have him.<\/p>\n

But can we talk about Steve Rogers?\u00a0 For those of you blissfully unaware, Captain America had the super-soldier serum leeched from his body, so after the Falcon took over the role and iconic shield of Captain America, Steve Rogers is just a wee little old man with a cane\u00a0in more of a strategic, advisory position.\u00a0 That is, when he\u2019s not being a vengeance-crazed lunatic\u00a0on a crusade against his fellow heroes, smashing stuff<\/a>, suiting up in battle-armor<\/a>, and again<\/em> suiting up in battle-armor<\/a>.\u00a0 I absolutely allow that Tony Stark has way more history and dramatic tension with Steve Rogers than with Sam Wilson, but I can\u2019t help but feel like Sam isn\u2019t getting a chance to (oh god) fully spread his wings (I\u2019m sorry) as Captain America while Steve hangs around like a helicopter parent.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
