{"id":300,"date":"2015-06-07T21:06:05","date_gmt":"2015-06-08T04:06:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.codyscomiccorner.com\/?p=300"},"modified":"2015-06-07T21:19:37","modified_gmt":"2015-06-08T04:19:37","slug":"all-new-x-men-41","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.codyscomiccorner.com\/?p=300","title":{"rendered":"All-New X-Men 41"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well shut my mouth, a Bendis storyline that wrapped up in a mere\u00a0<em>two<\/em> issues instead of the requisite six! \u00a0After the previous issue got me all riled up, I think the best one can say for this\u00a0unremarkable, by-the-numbers story\u00a0is that it didn&#8217;t outstay its welcome.<\/p>\n<p>We begin\u00a0with our teen X-Men <em>still<\/em> lounging around in the same sunlit field, basking in the warm glow of sexual tolerance and acceptance. \u00a0Their happy-times are interrupted by the S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier looming above, followed by what I think is my favorite part of this issue: Maria Hill descending from the helicarrier in <a href=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/8ibwQtX.png\" target=\"_blank\">the most nonchalant arrival<\/a> I&#8217;ve ever witnessed\u00a0from\u00a0someone wearing <em>rocket boots<\/em>. \u00a0(Also, please note Teen Beast&#8217;s contribution of\u00a0the word &#8220;Precisely!&#8221; \u00a0That&#8217;s a smart-sounding word, because he&#8217;s a smart guy!) \u00a0When Teen Iceman asks how she found them, since he thought they had a thing that blocked spy satellites, she points out that that&#8217;s how she knew to look there &#8212; &#8220;Hey, what&#8217;s that thing blocking our satellites?&#8221; &#8212; which I thought was moderately\u00a0clever. \u00a0Anyway, Maria tells them that a S.H.I.E.L.D. unit was brought down by mutants on the former X-Men island headquarters of Utopia, and rather than having the helicarrier fly in and make things worse, she, reasonably enough, decided to ask the X-Men to drop by and defuse the situation.<\/p>\n<p>Magik teleports the team to Utopia, and they confront this motley crew of tertiary X-characters. \u00a0Do you guys remember technopath Madison Jeffries, longtime member of Canada&#8217;s premiere superhero team Alpha Flight, as well as a more recent member of the X-Men&#8217;s science team? \u00a0How about young healer Elixir, who I&#8217;m happy to see was not, in fact, killed by Siphon during\u00a0the muddled, perplexing events leading up to Wolverines? \u00a0Or our old friend <a href=\"http:\/\/www.codyscomiccorner.com\/?p=111\" target=\"_blank\">Masque<\/a>? \u00a0Yes? \u00a0No? \u00a0Well you may as well forget &#8217;em, because out of the six renegade mutants holed up on what&#8217;s left of Utopia, these three do nothing to demonstrate their powers, contribute to the story, or even offer\u00a0more than a perfunctory line of dialogue. \u00a0So I hope none of you got\u00a0too excited at the thought of hanging out with them again! \u00a0Bendis isn&#8217;t here to please you <em>nerds<\/em>, after all! \u00a0Random asserts that they came to the island to live in peace, and that they don&#8217;t fight anybody unless they make a move first. \u00a0Rather than discuss\u00a0their ideological differences like civilized mutant revolutionaries, stupid Teen Jean instead telepathically forces all of them to fall asleep, except for Karma apparently, who telepathically possesses Teen Cyclops and X-23 to attack the Teen X-Men, prompting <a href=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/hlmF0W6.png\" target=\"_blank\">not one<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/kdrTFWY.png\" target=\"_blank\">but <em>two<\/em><\/a>\u00a0of them\u00a0to literally tell X-23 to &#8220;cut it out&#8221; as\u00a0this <em>unstoppable assassin\u00a0attempts to kill\u00a0them\u00a0with her deadly adamantium claws<\/em>. \u00a0(Haha, &#8220;Jeez!&#8221; \u00a0<em>You guys should really be more worried about this<\/em>.) (Also, please note Teen Beast&#8217;s use of\u00a0the word &#8220;compound!&#8221; \u00a0That&#8217;s a smart-sounding word, because he&#8217;s a smart guy!)\u00a0 While Boom Boom presses the attack, \u00a0Teen Jean reaches out to Karma telepathically and asks her to call this off, prompting a nice little\u00a0montage of Karma&#8217;s history that\u00a0shows <em>some<\/em>one must have done their research, if not Bendis himself.<\/p>\n<p>Cut directly to the Teen X-Men telling S.H.I.E.L.D. that they got away, then relocating the renegade mutants to their own hideout in the Canadian wilderness so they can\u00a0truly\u00a0be left in peace and solitude. \u00a0Have we learned anything? \u00a0Maybe, I guess. \u00a0Have any of our characters changed as a result of this story? \u00a0Well, apparently Teen Iceman is gayer now than he was at the start, that&#8217;s something. \u00a0And so, par for the course for a Bendis comic, the issue ends with Teen Jean asking a bunch of unanswered questions about how every story they&#8217;re in is the same story over and over: &#8220;We&#8217;ve all been through hell. \u00a0Why is it still like this for us? \u00a0What are we doing wrong? \u00a0What can we change?&#8221; \u00a0TO BE CONCLUDED\u2026 IN UNCANNY X-MEN #600 AT SOME UNDETERMINED POINT IN THE FUTURE! \u00a0And so I&#8217;d like to invite you, dear reader, to ponder these same questions with me: why is it still like this for us? \u00a0What are we doing wrong? \u00a0What can we change? \u00a0The obvious answer, of course, would be for me to stop reading as many Bendis comics as I do.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Well shut my mouth, a Bendis storyline that wrapped up in a mere\u00a0two issues instead of the requisite six! \u00a0After the previous issue got me all riled up, I think the best one can say for this\u00a0unremarkable, by-the-numbers story\u00a0is that it didn&#8217;t outstay its welcome.
